Mala
Making Magic
A mala is a string of
beads used as a traditional Buddhist tool to aid
prayer and meditation. Malas are used in the practice
of mantras, both helping to focus the mind and keep
track of the number of repetitions. A mala also
builds up power with repeated use and becomes an
intensely personal sacred object. On Saturday, July
7th, the Shambhala
Meditation Center of San Antonio will host a day-long
mala making experience. The day’s events include a
brief talk on the Dharma Arts at 9:00 am, following
by creating and sculpting beads, and ending in the
afternoon with stringing and loading the malas. Lunch
will be provided to all participants. The costs of
the Mala Making Magic are $15 (Ashoka Members), $20
(Members), $25 (Friends of Sangha), and $10 (Students
w/ID). Register
below. Participants will be
invited to make two malas, and then donate one to the
Center’s Dharma Store.

Celebrating
Family and Sangha
The final day of the
Shambhala Arts Festival 2007 will be devoted to the
celebration of family and sangha. Children and youth
of the sangha will display their “Day in the Life”
photographs and create collage banners of their
lives. These banners will be displayed throughout the
Center. All sangha members, and friends of the
sangha, will be invited to share in a potluck lunch
following public meditation at 12:30 pm. After lunch,
the sangha children and youth will be invited to
introduce and briefly discuss their photography and
