Book Study: The Sanity We are Born With - A Buddhist Approach to Psychology
May 31, 2007
Wednesdays, August 15-29 [7-9pm]
Chogyam
Trungpa, Rinpoche, the renowned Tibetan teacher,
meditation master, and founder of the Shambhala
Buddhist lineage was the first to use the language of
psychology in bringing the Buddhist teachings to the
west. This highly recommended book brings together
his penetrating views on Buddhist and Western
psychology and meditation. It will be of benefit to
anyone interested in psychology, psychotherapy,
meditation or the dharma. On three nights in August
we will discuss the concepts and view contained in
this fascinating and highly readable book and see how
they apply to our lives.
The class will be from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, August 15, 22, 29, 2007. It will begin with a short meditation session (meditation instruction will be available at 6:30 p.m. upon request). There will be a short introductory lecture each class period. The bulk of the class will be discussion of questions or topics in the reading that interest the participants. There will be no pressure to cover all of the questions. The time is short to cover the whole book in three sessions so everyone should read the assignment prior to the class and have some idea as to how they would answer the questions that interest them. If discussion runs out we will meditate for the balance of the period.
The book is available for $16.95 at the Shambhala Meditation Center. Anyone who prefers not to come to the Center until the first class can order the book on line from Shambhala Publications at shambhala.com The discussion questions and syllabus are available by e-mail upon request from pmcwhorter@satx.rr.com
